The Australian Government has recently announced several noteworthy changes to the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program that aspiring travellers should be aware of. These updates will create new opportunities for young people looking to experience life in Australia while working and exploring!
Starting October 1, 2024, a new pre-application (ballot) process will be implemented for the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa for high-demand partner countries. This means eligible passport holders from China, Vietnam, and India can register for a chance to apply for their first Work and Holiday visa.
This initiative aims to streamline the application process and manage the high demand for these visas effectively. Each country will have separate ballots, allowing eligible candidates to be randomly selected for the opportunity to apply. This is an exciting step forward for those eager to experience Australia's vibrant culture and diverse job market.
As of September 16, 2024, India has officially joined the WHM program, marking a significant milestone as the 50th partner country. Under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), eligible Indian passport holders will be able to register in a ballot starting October 1, 2024. Up to 1,000 young Indian citizens aged between 18 and 30 will be granted the opportunity to enjoy a year in Australia, where they can undertake short-term work and study while exploring the country.
This addition enhances the diversity of the WHM program and provides Indian youth with a fantastic opportunity to immerse themselves in Australian culture and gain valuable international work experience.
From February 2, 2024, Working Holiday Makers will be able to count paid or volunteer work related to natural disaster recovery as “specified work” for the purpose of extending their visas. This includes work in areas affected by natural disasters like cyclones or severe weather events. Importantly, this recognition will apply retroactively, allowing work done in declared disaster areas from December 31, 2021, to be counted.
This initiative reflects Australia’s commitment to recovery and resilience, offering WHM participants the chance to contribute to meaningful work while extending their stay in the country.
On September 8, 2023, Australia and the Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a Work and Holiday visa arrangement. This agreement allows up to 200 young Filipinos and Australians to enjoy a 12-month holiday in each other’s country each year. They can work short-term and study during their stay, providing a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange and personal growth.
Both governments are currently working on the administrative arrangements necessary to launch this program, and further details will be released soon.
The recent Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (Australia-UK FTA) has also brought about new arrangements for UK passport holders. From July 1, 2024, those applying for a second or third Working Holiday visa will no longer need to meet the specified work requirement. Additionally, applicants for a Working Holiday visa can now be aged between 18 and 35 at the time of application, expanding eligibility for this popular visa category.
It’s essential for Working Holiday Makers to be aware of visa condition 8547, which limits holders to a maximum of six months’ work with any one employer. While this condition applies broadly, there are exemptions and grounds for obtaining written permission for longer employment.
Due to a high volume of applications, the Department of Home Affairs is currently experiencing processing delays for WHM visas. It’s crucial to be patient and refrain from making travel arrangements until you receive written confirmation of your visa grant. To check the status of your application or upload new information, you can use the ImmiAccount portal.
