National Innovation Visa: Attracting Global Talent to Australia

The Australian Government has introduced the National Innovation Visa (NIV), a permanent visa program for exceptionally talented migrants, effective from December 7, 2024. This visa replaces the Global Talent Visa and aims to attract individuals with world-leading skills to contribute to Australia's long-term prosperity.

Application Process:

  • Expression of Interest (EOI): Prospective applicants must submit an EOI to the Department of Home Affairs. Successful candidates will receive an invitation to apply for the NIV.

Priority Categories:

The NIV application process prioritizes candidates in the following order:

  1. Recipients of internationally prestigious awards: Such as Nobel Prize laureates, Fields Medal recipients, Booker Prize winners, or Olympic gold medallists.

  2. Exceptionally talented individuals endorsed by a relevant Australian government agency: This includes endorsements from state, territory, or federal agencies.

  3. Individuals with exceptional skills in critical sectors: Including critical technologies, renewables and low emission technologies, and health industries.

  4. Talented individuals in key industries: Such as agri-food and ag-tech, resources, defence capabilities and space, education, financial services and fin-tech, and infrastructure and transport.

Eligibility and Benefits:

  • Age and Language Requirements: There is no age limit for the NIV, and English language requirements are flexible.

  • Residency Status: NIV holders can stay in Australia permanently.

  • Work and Study: Visa holders are permitted to work and study in Australia.

  • Healthcare Access: Enrolment in Australia's public healthcare scheme, Medicare, is available.

  • Family Sponsorship: NIV holders can sponsor relatives to come to Australia.

  • Travel Rights: Visa holders can travel to and from Australia for five years.
