Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of visa grant.

With this visa, you can

  • Stay in Australia permanently
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Enrol in Australia's public health care scheme, Medicare
  • Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
  • If eligible, become an Australian citizen

General Eligibility Criteria

  • Be aged between 18 to 45 year.
  • Have a relevant occupation in the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List
  • Have a skills assessment from the relevant skills assessment body
  • Have at least competent English
  • Be invited to apply
  • Meet the health and character requirements

How long you can stay

  • This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of visa grant.
  • You become a permanent resident on the day Immigration grants the visa.

This is a points-tested visa

  • When you submit your EOI in Skill Select you will be given an indicative point score based on the claims you have made. You have to obtain a minimum score of 65 points to be invited to apply for this visa.
  • When you lodge your application you must provide evidence supporting your claims.

The EOI calculate points on the basis of following factors

  • Age
  • Educational Qualification
  • Australian Education
  • Level of English
  • Work Experience (Australian or Overseas)
  • CCL / NAATI
  • Professional Year (IT/Accounting/Engineering)

Cost

  • The visa costs AUD4,045 for the main applicant.

  • You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when a decision is made.

Family

  • You can include your partner and your or your partner’s child or stepchild in your application.
  • Family members who are granted the visa have the same rights and can do the same things as you.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491)

This visa is for skilled people nominated by a state or territory government to live and work in regional Australia.

With this visa, you can

  • Stay in Australia for 5 years
  • Live, work and study in a designated regional area of Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid
  • Apply for permanent residence, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) – which commences on 16 November 2022.

General Eligibility Criteria

  • You must be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you
  • Have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
  • Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • Be invited to apply
  • Satisfy the points test

How long you can stay

  • This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for 5 years from the date your visa is granted.

Stay longer

  • You can't stay in Australia longer by extending this visa. 

Include family

  • You can include members of the family unit in your application

Cost
