Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of visa grant.
With this visa, you can
- Stay in Australia permanently
- Work and study in Australia
- Enrol in Australia's public health care scheme, Medicare
- Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia
- Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
- If eligible, become an Australian citizen
General Eligibility Criteria
- Be aged between 18 to 45 year.
- Have a relevant occupation in the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List
- Have a skills assessment from the relevant skills assessment body
- Have at least competent English
- Be invited to apply
- Meet the health and character requirements
How long you can stay
- This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of visa grant.
- You become a permanent resident on the day Immigration grants the visa.
This is a points-tested visa
- When you submit your EOI in Skill Select you will be given an indicative point score based on the claims you have made. You have to obtain a minimum score of 65 points to be invited to apply for this visa.
- When you lodge your application you must provide evidence supporting your claims.
The EOI calculate points on the basis of following factors
- Age
- Educational Qualification
- Australian Education
- Level of English
- Work Experience (Australian or Overseas)
- CCL / NAATI
- Professional Year (IT/Accounting/Engineering)
- Single / Partner skills
Cost
- The visa costs AUD4,045 for the main applicant.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491)
This visa is for skilled people nominated by a state or territory government to live and work in regional Australia.
With this visa, you can
- Stay in Australia for 5 years
- Live, work and study in a designated regional area of Australia
- Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid
- Apply for permanent residence, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) – which commences on 16 November 2022.
General Eligibility Criteria
- You must be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you
- Have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
- Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation

How long you can stay
- This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for 5 years from the date your visa is granted.
Stay longer
- You can't stay in Australia longer by extending this visa.
Include family
- You can include members of the family unit in your application

Your obligations

Travel
