Temporary Graduate Visa
  • This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily.
  • It is work visa for international students who have completed 2 years of study in Australia. 
  • The minimum duration of this visa is from 18 months and lasts up to 4 years. This visa has proved as a bridge to improve your chances and eligibility for a permanent or provisional visa. 

Streams of 485 visa

  • Post study work stream- Generally valid for minimum 2 years
  • Graduate Work Stream- valid of minimum 18 months

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant must demonstrate a minimum level of English score to be eligible for this visa. 
  • *Citizens of United Stated, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland are exempt of this condition. 
  • Australian Study requirement: The applicant must meet the 2-year study requirement and must have held an eligible student visa within the 6-month period prior to lodgement.
  • Visa is lodged onshore: The primary applicant must be in Australia when they make their application for a 485 visa, DHA will only issue an outcome if the applicant is in Australia. 
  • Meet the health and character requirements: The applicant must meet the character requirement prescribed by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and must hold a private overseas student health cover (OVHC) insurance. 

Including Family Members

The applicant can include the following family members as a part of the application. 

  • Spouse
  • Defacto Partners/Same sex partners
  • Dependent Children

English Requirement

  • The new English requirements for both the Post Study Work Stream and Graduate Work Stream are as follows:
  • Hold a passport from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada or New Zealand; or
  • IELTS (Academic or General Training): overall average of 6 and at least 5 in each band; or
  • Occupational English Test (OET): B Pass in each band; or
  • Pearson (PTE Academic): overall average of 50 with at least 36 in each band; or
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test): total score of 64, with at least 4 in Listening and Reading, and at least 14 in Writing and Speaking; or
  • Cambridge (CAE): 169 overall average with at least 154 in each band.

This represents a significant lowering of the English language requirement and will be a great relief to applicants who have struggled to meet the minimum score required in each band.


Points to note

  • Some skills assessment authorities (eg the Accounting Professional Bodies) require
  • English testing for the Graduate Work skills assessment – there is no indication as yet as to whether the assessment authorities will change their English language requirements.
  • If completing the OET, the required scores have not changed.
  • The English requirements for the Recognised Graduate Subclass 476 visa are similar

 

485 Dependent Visa

  • Applicants who already hold a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) in Australia can apply for their Spouse/Defacto/Same Sex Partners/ Dependent Children to join them in Australia on a 485 visa.

Skilled Recognised Graduate Subclass 476 Visa

  • The Skilled — Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476) allows recent engineering graduates of eligible universities to gain up to 18 months of skilled work experience in occupations. It is a temporary visa.
  • Your family can also apply to join you in Australia after the visa is granted.

Eligibility

  • You must be under 31 years of age
  • You must have completed an engineering degree at a recognised institution in the past two years
  • You must not have been the primary visa holder of a subclass 476 or 485 visa.

Who could get this visa?

  • You might be able to get a Skilled — Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476) if:
  • You are younger than 31 years of age
  • You have completed an eligible engineering qualification from a recognised institution in the past two years
  • You have not held a Skilled — Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476) or a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) before (unless you were a member of the family unit)
  • You can demonstrate your English language ability
  • You meet health and character requirements.

In the two years before you apply, you must have completed one of the following qualifications in engineering:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Master’s degree
  • Doctoral degree
  • Postgraduate diploma.
  • Your qualification must contain a major sequence of study or specialisation in engineering, such as:
  • Civil engineering
  • Structural engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Electrical and electronics engineering
  • Mechanical, production and plant engineering
  • Mining and material engineering. 

Recognised institutions

  • You must have completed your engineering qualification at a recognised educational institution. Study at an institution or college that is affiliated with a recognised institution does not satisfy this requirement.

English language ability

  • If you are a citizen of the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States of America or the Republic of Ireland or you hold a valid passport from one of those countries, you are considered to meet the English language requirement for this visa. Otherwise, you must provide evidence of having achieved the following scores from one of the specified English language tests. You must complete your English language test before you apply.

Location

  • You may be inside or outside Australia when you apply for this visa however you must be outside of Australia when the visa is decided, unless you are a New Zealand citizen who holds a Special Category visa (subclass 444). A New Zealand citizen who holds a Special Category visa (subclass 444) can be in or outside Australia when the visa is decided.
